Meet Our Contributors: Carine's Story

Meet our Through, Not Around Contributors!

I was lucky enough to be the editor on Carine's piece. Her writing is beautiful, smart, and very memorable. So memorable that I remember tearing up on the plane when I first read it because she captures such difficult emotions in such a moving and thoughtful way.

Thank you, Carine, but sharing your story in Through, Not Around. I can't wait to share your essay with everyone in January!

1) Why did you decide to share your story in Through, Not Around and with the 16 Percent community?

By sharing our stories, we help each other come to terms with our losses. We open ourselves to the suffering of others in a way that nurtures compassion, both for ourselves and for the world. I am hoping my story will bring some measure of comfort to someone out there who is feeling very alone with the pain.

2) Has writing about your experience helped you heal in any way? What have you learned through this experience so far?

Writing about my grief so many years after the event has helped me reframe the story from a place of calm and acceptance. It has also helped me recapture some of the vivid details and emotions of a time that had a profound influence on the person I am today. I consider that self-reflection healing and enlightening.

3) Tell us more about you. What are your hobbies/passions/pursuits? (Optional question to answer)

Swimming every day. Being in water is primordial and therapeutic. Reading. Being immersed in a book is liberating. Celebrating solitude and connection with others.

4) What is your favourite quote?

“So the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing.”
