16% of Canadians will experience infertility in some way, shape or form.

This is a space where we will share their stories, to let others know they are not alone, and to let the healing begin.

Meet Our Contributors: Cynthia's Story

Cynthia is my best friend. When we met, we had no idea we would be in this infertility boat together. I'm so happy we have her essay about going through IVF because it's a different kind of story: one that finds great happiness outside of having a baby. She also started an amazing collection of self-care treats that make you want to take a bath each and every night! https://www.bareskinbar.com/

Thank you, Cynthia. Love you so much!

1) Why did you decide to share your story in Through, Not Around and with the 16 Percent community?

Infertility had become more prevalent among my group of friends in our thirties, and The 16 Percent community provided an outlet to talk about it.

2) Has writing about your experience helped you heal in any way? What have you learned through this experience so far?

Writing has always been a strong source of release for me in times of stress. Sharing my story with other women, and gaining insight into other personal experiences in exchange, has been an eye-opener as to how big and supportive this community is.

3) Tell us more about you. What are your hobbies/passions/pursuits?

Shortly after my experience with infertility began, I focused my attention on turning my handmade skincare hobby into a side business pursuit. I still work as a freelance advertising producer, but now run a small self-care business full time.

4) What is your favourite quote?

Comparison is the thief of joy.

We live in a world where everyone's lives look perfect online and often forget that we are looking at someone's highlight reel. While beautiful to look at, it's important to recognize that real life behind the little squares and character-limited updates can be messy and heartbreaking, and very few people are openly posting about their failures.
